Hospitality Solution

Hotel Hotspot Solution

The captive portal opens with the hotel's own identity; the guest is verified against the stay record in the hotel software the property already uses. Portal design, verification, time and speed management and signed access logging all run on the same device — you do not need to set up a separate portal server or log server.

What is the problem?

Let the internet be ready by the time the guest reaches the room

Guest internet in a hotel has to meet two separate expectations at once: the guest must be able to connect without any effort, while the business must know who joined the network and keep the access record. Reception staff opening a separate account for every guest, or handing one shared password to the whole hotel, meets neither expectation.

In the hotel hotspot solution the guest is verified against the stay record already created at reception. The captive portal, verification, time and speed management and record retention all run on a single device; no separate portal or log server is needed.

Guest Login Flow

Four steps from check-in to check-out

The whole flow sits on top of the hotel's existing way of working: reception keeps doing exactly what it does today, and internet access feeds off that record.

01

The guest is registered at reception

The stay record is already created in the hotel management system. The hotspot works integrated with that system; you do not need to keep a separate guest list or open an account by hand for each guest.

02

They connect to the network in the room or the lobby

When the guest joins your wireless network, their first request lands on the captive portal; they cannot reach the internet before being verified. The hotel's logo and welcome message are published on that page.

03

They are verified against the stay record

Verification is done against the record in the hotel management system. Where the integration is not used, an SMS sent to the phone number or the username–password method is engaged; a one-time password can also be given to the guest.

04

Access opens, the record is signed

The verified guest goes online; the speed limit and quota you defined are applied and they can be redirected to any page you like after login. The access records produced during the session are signed with a time stamp and stored on the device.

Verification Options

The guest is verified against their record in the hotel software

The primary method in a hotel is verifying the guest against the stay record in the hotel software: the guest opens no separate account and reception does no extra work. Ready-made integrations for common hotel software ship on the device; there are methods for cases where the integration is not used, too.

Cases where the hotel system integration is not used

Day visitors, meeting attendees and hotel staff do not appear in the stay record. The methods below are used for those logins; all of them can work alongside the hotel software integration.

SMS verification

Login with a code sent to the guest's phone number. It is one of the methods named in the regulation for identifying users in publicly accessible areas.

One-time password

A one-time password is generated for day visitors, meeting attendees and short-term access; it can be handed over as a slip from the thermal printer.

Username and password

Login with defined accounts for hotel staff and long-term access.

Access without seeing the portal

An exemption is defined for privileged users in the hotspot permissions; hotel management or service devices can be allowed to connect without seeing the captive portal.

For all of the verification methods and their technical details, see the XLOG Hotspot product page.

Captive Portal and Vouchers

The first page the guest sees is the hotel's own page

The hotspot captive portal can be designed; the hotel's logo or any welcome message you like is published on that page. Once the login is complete, the guest is redirected automatically to any site you choose — the landing page can also redirect to https addresses.

A one-time password is generated for cases where you need to grant access outside the registered guests. Thanks to thermal printer integration, the username and password are printed as a slip; reception hands over the slip and the guest does not have to type the details by hand.

The tools reception has at hand
The hotel's logo and welcome message are published on the captive portal
One-time passwords are created for guests
With thermal printer integration the username and password are handed over as a slip
The internet login and logout times of guests who signed in are listed
Currently active users and their quota usage are displayed
Devices generating excessive traffic appear at the top of the list
Time, Speed and Quota

The hotel decides how long and how fast access lasts

One hour of free access in the lobby, an open connection in the room for the length of the stay, higher speed in the meeting room: different rules are defined on the same device.

Time-limited access

You can tie access to a time limit. Different rules such as short-term use in the lobby and an open connection in the room for the length of the stay are defined on the same device.

Speed limiting

Download and upload speed is defined per user or per MAC address; total line capacity is distributed among the guests as needed.

Timed billing

A timed billing module is available for businesses that want to charge for internet access.

Quota and automatic cut-off

A daily quota is defined per user or per MAC address; the internet access of a guest who exceeds the quota is cut off by the system.
